Whether branded apparel appears at a community event or inside the branch, it becomes a visible extension of your brand. When it comes to graphic-driven apparel, three primary decoration methods dominate the conversation: screen printing, Direct to Garment (DTG), and Direct to Film (DTF). Each serves a different purpose depending on artwork, fabric, order size, and durability needs.
Understanding when to use each method helps teams make the right decision while balancing budget, longevity, and brand standards.
Note: We believe, that when it comes to traditional business wear such as polos and button-downs, embroidery remains the standard.
What Is Screen Printing?
Screen Printing is a traditional decoration method that pushes ink through a mesh screen onto the garment. Each color in the design requires its own screen, making the process best suited for larger runs.
Why Screen Printing Works Well
- Cost effective for high quantities
- Strong color opacity and vibrancy
- Durable for repeated washing
- Ideal for bold, simple graphics
Screen printing is often the best choice for large community events or volunteer shirts where quantities are higher and artwork is straightforward.
Where Screen Printing Is Less Ideal
- Small order quantities
- Highly detailed artwork with gradients
- Frequent design changes
Because setup is required for each design and color, screen printing becomes less efficient for small or short-run projects.
What Is DTG Printing?
Direct-to-Garment printing applies water-based ink directly into the fabric, similar to how an inkjet printer works on paper.
Why DTG Works Well for Graphic Tees
- Excellent detail reproduction and gradients
- Soft, breathable feel
- Ideal for 100% cotton shirts
Because the ink absorbs into the fibers, the finished product feels natural and lightweight. For cotton shirts with detailed artwork, DTG performs well. DTG is our recommendation when comfort and design detail are the priority.
Where DTG Is Less Ideal
- Polyester and performance fabrics
- Long-term, heavy daily wear
- Situations requiring maximum durability
What Is DTF Printing?
Direct-to-Film printing uses a transfer process. The design is printed onto film, treated with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat-pressed onto the garment.
Unlike DTG, the design bonds to the fabric’s surface rather than absorbing into it.
Why DTF Is Versatile for Performance Wear
- Works on cotton, polyester, blends, and performance materials
- Strong color vibrancy across fabric types
- Durable for repeated washing
- Flexible for mixed garment orders
What to Consider
- Slightly thicker feel than DTG
- Can feel more like a transfer on lightweight garments
- For performance fabrics or situations requiring greater durability, DTF is often the more practical choice.
What About Polos and Business Apparel?
For branch staff uniforms, executive polos, and button-down shirts, traditional embroidery remains our preferred method of decoration. Embroidery provides:
- Professional, elevated appearance
- Exceptional durability
- Appropriate for structured business garments
While DTF can be applied to polos, we believe embroidery communicates professionalism in a way printed graphics typically do not. For financial institutions focused on brand credibility, embroidery remains the standard for everyday business wear.
How to Decide
When evaluating decoration methods, consider three primary factors.
- Quantity: Large event order? Screen printing is often most cost effective.
Small orders? DTG or DTF may be better suited. - Fabric: Cotton tees support DTG well.
Performance fabrics and blends lean toward DTF.
High-volume cotton event shirts often align with screen printing. - Design Complexity: Simple, bold graphics scale well with screen printing.
Highly detailed artwork with gradients favors DTG.
Mixed-fabric applications often call for DTF.
Let Element Simplify Your Apparel Logistics
Selecting the right decoration method is only part of the equation. For many financial institutions, the greater challenge is managing apparel programs across multiple branches and teams. Collecting sizes, coordinating preferences, and tracking orders often results in spreadsheets and unnecessary back-and-forth.
The Element Group streamlines this process through custom redemption and apparel stores, branded e-commerce-style shops that allow employees or event participants to select their approved apparel and sizes directly. Whether the program includes screen printed event shirts, DTF performance wear, DTG graphic tees, or embroidered business apparel, our platform centralizes ordering, reduces administrative burden, and ensures a controlled, professional rollout.
