Case Study: CNB Bank Branch Prototype Model

Across Network

PROJECT OVERVIEW

CNB Bank selected The Element Group to develop a new prototype branch model that could be used across all divisions of the organization, including BankOnBuffalo, ERIEBANK, FCBank, and Ridge View Bank. The goal was to create a flexible retail model that could be efficiently deployed, fit both new builds and renovations, and deliver a consistent customer experience across markets.

The Element Group designed a 2,000 sq ft prototype that established a clear floor plan, finish palette, technology package, furniture system, and branded experience framework. The Element Group was chosen for its experience in strategic design and its ability to deliver branch prototypes that scale. By standardizing the branch model, we reduced design time, shortened project schedules, and ensured that every branch felt unified across the broader network.

The Challenge

CNB needed a branch model that could work across different building conditions, square footage, and local market brands while still feeling consistent, scalable, and efficient. The prototype needed to:

  • Fit within CNB’s preferred footprint of roughly 2,000 sq ft
  • Work for both new construction and renovation projects
  • Reduce design time for each branch project
  • Lower long term cost by standardizing finishes and materials
  • Deliver a familiar experience across CNB markets
  • Allow graphics and community messaging to change by local brand
  • Support CNB’s SMART Center format, including digital engagement tools

Retail Strategy

The work began with an in depth discovery process that explored the brand, customer expectations, and competitive landscape. Insights from this phase shaped a retail strategy that connected branch design to customer journeys, staffing needs, and business objectives.

Activities included:

  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Review of brand positioning and customer insights
  • On site evaluations of existing branches
  • Development of multiple concepts

A Standardized Finish Palette and Material Set

Using the approved strategy, The Element Group created prototype plans that set the foundation for all future branch projects. The design prioritized customer choreography, service zones, sightlines, privacy, and areas suited to both relationship banking and digital engagement.

The team then prepared a complete design package suitable for construction documentation and future rollouts. Deliverables included:

  • Floor plans
  • Interior elevations and material selections
  • Lighting and ceiling plans
  • Renderings
  • Technology, power, and data requirements
  • Merchandising and digital signage strategy

Digital Experience and Interactive Technology

As part of the prototype branch, The Element Group integrated a series of digital components that support customer engagement and complement the overall retail design.

  • Three Screen Video Wall: The branch features a three screen vertical video wall that allows each branch to run a single visual or divide content into individual screens.
  • Touchscreen Resource Center: A touchscreen provides customers with access to financial literacy resources and options to connect with bank employees.
  • Kids Zone Interactive Display: A second touchscreen offers simple games such as memory, puzzles, trivia, or coloring activities.
  • Digital Coffee Bar Display: A single display behind an interchangeable overlay shows animated steam, time, weather, and branded content. The overlay and digital graphics can be easily updated for seasons, campaigns, or community messaging.

Result

The SMART Center prototype model gives CNB a scalable, cost-effective way to open new branches and renovate existing ones. CNB and its divisions will continue to see the benefits of this work for years to come:

  • Faster project timelines due to reduced design time
  • Brand consistency across all CNB markets
  • A familiar experience for customers no matter which division they visit
  • Lower long-term cost because finishes, furniture, and materials stay consistent
  • Clearer operational flow across branches
  • Ability to adapt the prototype to different building conditions
