Bay Federal Credit Union - In-line Branch

Marina, CA

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Overview

Bay Federal Credit Union’s newest branch at the Promenade at the Dunes in Marina, CA demonstrates how a smartly designed layout can support a full-service member experience when design, graphics, technology, and choreography are aligned. Located in a high-traffic, mixed-use development adjacent to a Trader Joe’s, the in-line branch was designed to be highly visible, welcoming, and intuitive, while still meeting the operational, privacy, and regulatory needs of a modern credit union.

At 1,623 square feet, the Marina Branch is a smaller space than Bay Federal would typically require to house this level of functionality in a traditional branch. The challenge was not simply fitting the programmatic needs into the space, but ensuring that it felt private yet open, and distinctly Bay Federal.

This project illustrates how thoughtful design strategies, including acoustic zoning, environmental graphics, and early client collaboration, can maximize both space and experience.

Project Goals

Bay Federal Credit Union envisioned the Marina Branch as a highly accessible neighborhood location that could serve both daily transactions and deeper financial conversations. The site sits within a newly developed retail and residential district, making visibility and approachability critical to success.

From the outset, the branch needed to include:
  • Teller service
  • Financial Services Consultant areas
  • A dedicated greeter station
  • A coin machine
  • Digital engagement opportunities
  • Three private offices
  • A children’s engagement area
  • A break room with secure work and cash-handling functions

Accommodating all of these requirements within a compact inline space required a departure from conventional layouts and an emphasis on choreography and zoning rather than enclosure.

Collaborative Design Process

A defining aspect of the Marina Branch project was the collaborative design process. Bay Federal wanted a fresh perspective on its brand, with an emphasis on personalized member services.

The Element Group encourages clients to come into the office during the design phase, a practice that consistently improves alignment and can cut weeks off the delivery schedule. For Bay Federal, this approach proved especially valuable. During early design phases, Element developed multiple layout options and presented them not only through traditional drawings but also through hands-on and immersive tools.

A physical foam-core model of the branch was constructed, allowing Bay Federal stakeholders to gather around a shared, three-dimensional representation of the space. Individual components could be moved and rearranged, helping the team better understand spatial relationships and test different scenarios in real time.

This physical model was complemented by a VR walkthrough. Together, these tools helped stakeholders visualize scale, flow, and adjacencies far more effectively than drawings alone. Decisions that might otherwise have required multiple rounds of revision were resolved collaboratively and confidently.

Choreography and Member Journey

Because the branch could not rely on walls to create separation, choreography became the primary design tool. The space is organized into clear zones that guide members naturally from entry to service.

Welcome Zone

Upon entering the branch, members immediately encounter a clearly defined welcome zone. The greeter station is positioned near the door, reinforcing Bay Federal’s service-first approach. The station was designed in modular components so portions can be removed or reconfigured for after-hours events or changing needs.

Adjacent to the entry is the coin machine, intentionally placed for members who want to complete a quick transaction and exit without navigating the entire branch. A touchscreen nearby provides an additional engagement point, allowing members to interact digitally while waiting or orienting themselves.

Lobby and Waiting Zone

Beyond the entry, the lobby transitions into a comfortable waiting area. Coffee service and a children’s interactive table support longer visits and create a welcoming atmosphere for families. Acoustic ceiling elements and flooring transitions subtly define this zone without visual barriers.

Financial Services Consultant Zone

Deeper into the space, dedicated Financial Services Consultant areas support more in-depth conversations. Touch tables are integrated into millwork, with complementary wall-mounted screens to support digital interaction. A layered wave-inspired graphic element acts as a focal point between these digital features, reinforcing brand identity while anchoring the zone visually.

This area is open, yet acoustically controlled using acoustic baffles, acoustic wall paneling and carpeting, allowing private conversations to occur without isolating members from the rest of the branch.

Teller Zone

The teller line sits at the heart of the branch, maintaining familiarity for members accustomed to Bay Federal’s existing locations. The far right teller position is ADA-adjustable and designed to visually align with the others when not in use, preserving a clean and consistent appearance.

Behind the teller line, a stone feature wall integrates a large digital display, modernizing a signature Bay Federal element without abandoning brand continuity.

Office Zone

Three private offices are located along the far side of the branch within a structural bump-out. This placement maximizes open lobby space while providing enclosed areas for sensitive discussions. Glass fronts maintain sightlines for safety and transparency, while banding and acoustic treatments provide the desired level of privacy.

Acoustic Strategy

Acoustic performance was a central design consideration throughout the Marina Branch. With an open plan and a high concentration of activity, sound control was essential to creating a comfortable environment for both members and staff.

Rather than enclosing spaces, the design relies on layered acoustic solutions:

  • Hanging acoustic baffles define zones overhead without blocking visibility.
  • Felt-based acoustic materials are used on ceilings and walls to absorb sound.
  • Materials printed with wood textures provide warmth while maintaining acoustic performance.
  • Offices include additional acoustic wall panels and ceiling treatments to support confidential conversations.

These strategies allow conversations to remain localized, reducing noise transfer across the branch and reinforcing a sense of calm.

Environmental Graphics and Brand Integration

Environmental graphics play a critical role in tying the space together. Bay Federal’s ocean-inspired brand elements, including wave patterns and a coastal color palette, are integrated throughout the branch in subtle, functional ways.

Glass banding on offices and exterior windows serves multiple purposes. It adds visual interest, reinforces brand identity, and provides privacy while maintaining required sightlines for safety and security. Banding heights and transparency were carefully considered to avoid blocking views or creating a closed-off feel.

The walk-up ATMs and coin machine’s custom wraps transform a typically utilitarian feature into a branded moment. Enlarged and abstracted uses of the Bay Federal logo function as graphic texture, adding character without visual clutter.

Even required compliance and wayfinding signage is treated as part of the overall design system, contributing to professionalism and consistency rather than detracting from the experience.

Technology as a Support Tool

Technology in the Marina Branch is integrated to enhance service rather than dominate it. Interactive touch tables and digital displays support Financial Services Consultant conversations, while a children’s interactive table provides engagement for younger visitors.

Behind the scenes, offices are future-proofed with power and data infrastructure to accommodate additional screens if needed later. This allows the branch to evolve without significant disruption or renovation.

The integrated video wall extends the branch’s presence beyond operating hours, increasing visibility and allowing marketing messages to remain active at night.

Staff Experience and Back-of-House Design

While much of the design focuses on the member experience, staff needs were equally important. Due to space constraints, the break room also functions as a secure workroom.

The room is divided so that operational functions are separated from the true break area. On one side, equipment clearances, safes, and service access are carefully planned. On the other, comfortable seating, appliances, and storage support meaningful breaks and team gatherings.

This dual-purpose design ensures staff are supported without compromising branch operations.

Results

The Marina Branch successfully delivers a full-service Bay Federal experience within a compact footprint. Through thoughtful choreography, acoustic control, and integrated graphics, the branch feels open, welcoming, and intuitive rather than constrained.

The project demonstrates how early collaboration, hands-on prototyping, and cross-disciplinary coordination can produce efficient layouts, confident decision-making, and spaces that serve both members and staff effectively.

As Bay Federal continues to evolve its branch network, the Marina Branch serves as a strong example of how smaller-format locations can achieve an outsized impact through intentional design.
